Dancing with Depression

Mindfulness, Movement & Soulful Exploration

Working with movement, image, metaphor, architypes, creative expression, sound, drawing, writing, sharing.

Exploring different frameworks: loss of soul, soul-retrival, heros journey, whatever other archytye there is for depression, the dark night of the soul, swamplands, opportunity for transformation and rebirth, situational depressio and burnout (suicidal) - if your tank is empty, what does it need to fill up? Spiritually, physically, materially? Let the body speak

Everyone lights one or several tealights at the start - we blow them out but keep a big candle buring to symbolicay represent all of the individual candes (representing losses, hopes, fears, intentions, aspirations, etc).

The invitation will be to people (much like the creative dream work workshop) to collect images, ask for dream images and dreams prior to the workshop.

This day-long workshop is then going to focus on
-Morning: coming into the body
& like Miranda, talk about symbolic meaning / different frameworks for understanding depression - no one is better than another, but maybe one jumps out at you that feels a good fit for a refreame (as opposed to pathologise)
-Afternoon: working in pairs to crystylise one image/symbol (just as in Tim's workshop) to work with in terms of healing and understanding - this symbol will be worked with over the next six weeks

This day-long workshop will be followed by 3 optional online sessions (just this group) where we check in and work deeper with the symbols (just like in Tim's first workshop), they will be spaced fortnightly. Maybe the last one at the three or four week point to allow the image / symbol to develop and its meassage to be applied in live (louise von Franz in Jung's "Man and his symbols"

"What we call the beginning is often the end. And to make an end is to make a beginning. The end is where we start from."

T.S. Eliot

Not only is depression rampant in our society and culture, but it is also being pathologized, considered abnormal and disordered.

What if there were other frameworks and maps for understanding, approaching and working with these kinds of "dark nights of the Soul"?

What if, at their core, they held a promise of healing, greater wholeness, entering territory unchartered, an invitation to integration, transformation and rebirth?

What if there was a way of dancing with it - opening, in our hearts, to a genuine invitation for it to show up fully, honouring its wisdom, message, willing to listen and learn?

about fixing anything, but an active & interactive exploration aimed at expanding the range of inner resources available to us as we surf the waves. Because, as Kabat-Zinn put it:

“You can't stop the waves,

but you can learn to surf.”

This course is firmly grounded in the principles of and largely uses the structure of John Kabat Zinn's groundbreaking 8-week mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) programme that has brought mindfulness and meditation to the mainstream over the past 50 years, has changed countless peoples' lives and expanded their experience of what it means to be human.

It also incorporates elements of MBCT (Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy), Focussing - Gendlin's formalised practice of deep inner listening - Somatic Movement Education and various other approaches that support the development of embodied presence, connecting with the wisdom of the body and body-mind integration.

The course is highly interactive, experiential and rich. It comprises 10 weekly live online sessions that build on each other, pair-, group- and homework.

The course takes a gradual approach to inviting each person at their own pace on a journey of discovery, inquiry, re-connection, exploration and transformation as we create a solid foundation in a number of practices and approaches aimed at developing embodied presence, delving ever deeper.

At the same time, the entire course is fundamentally designed to encourage and make it easy for you to immediately apply and integrate what you learn in your everyday life.

Suitable for ages 16 to 105.

The course will be limited to a small group size and
